Below was an Early Day Motion in UK Parliament in 1993 following the suicide of Graham Clay. 31 years later people are still being driven to stress and suicide following interventions by the UK’s Child Maintenance Service (CMS). It was then the Child Support Agency (CSA) and now the CMS. From a service perspective nothing has changed, it has only become worse and the only change is the eyes of those who suffer is the name. STOPSuicide is researching the deaths and causal links. The Government denies any causal link but it is obvious to those impacted. Our mission is to STOP this happening and our research into critical paths that lead to such dreadful outcomes is well underway.

Early Day Motion text to UK Parliament
That this House notes with deep concern the death of Graham Clay, Head Guide at Newstead Abbey, who was found hanged there the day after receiving correspondence from the Child Support Agency informing him his £100 per month maintenance payments, which had been fixed by local magistrates, were to increase to £300 per month; expresses its sympathy for all his family; further recognises that many other people have already received similar demands and will continue to do so; and therefore asks that the activities of the Child Support Agency be restricted to tracing those who have no arrangements with the courts, until such time as the recommendations of the Social Security Select Committee can be considered and procedures can be put in place to ensure that the Child Support Agency’s narrow formula is abandoned and proper assessment is made of people’s ability to pay.
Q. What Has Changed in 31 Years Since Graham Clay Took his Life? A. The CSA Changed Name to CMS!
