The Daily Mail’s investigation highlights the devastating human impact that can arise when child maintenance disputes become dominated by process and enforcement rather than safeguarding. At STOPSuicides UK, we regularly hear from parents who describe overwhelming financial pressure, prolonged disputes and deteriorating mental health, with some reaching suicidal crisis. Child maintenance exists to support children, but no system should lose sight of the wellbeing of the people within it. This investigation should be a catalyst for a Public Inquiry, urgent reform, stronger safeguarding and greater accountability before more families suffer preventable tragedy.
